I'm an old guy--much older than I ever imagined being. When I was young, I was introduced, as part of a workshop at work, to the ideas of Transactional Analysis. While there were many exceptional books about the concept, such as "I'm Okay, You're Okay," and "Games People Play," this was the one book that brought all of the concepts together. And it's not BS. Years later, TA is but a minor memory from my youth. But, then I see someone engaging in a game of "Why don't you?
Yes, but? Paperback Verified Purchase. This is a really good book in spite its age. In other words it's timeless. I have read it before and the older edition had perhaps a better winner and loser thinking section in it, although these sections in the old version could have used some improvement, and in some ways they did, but in some ways they did not by unneeded editing..
I have not read the sections on sexuality, because, simply put that is not were my concerns are then or now. The rest I know to be pretty darn good.
I have recommended this book for years. The first part of the book is an excellent introduction to the social psychology of Transactional Analysis. I have found none better. The second half of the book focuses on Gestalt therapy and may or may not be interesting to a person wanting to learn about the invaluable communcation system of TA. This is a book from the 70s, but it continues to be positive and helpful to anyone who wants to know why they "tock" when they should be "ticking" and wants to be mentally and emotionally healthier.
Fantastic self-help tool! I first discovered this book in the original edition in the early s and used it for a course in self-discovery that I taught at the University of Akron. Since then I have purchased and given away many copies. The book continues to be relevant and the latest update, only extends the value by putting more up to date illustrations.
This book is based on two of the best models for self-development, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. These two meld nicely into the latest information coming out of the field and research. I love it so much I re-read it as an adult. One person found this helpful. I have been a practicing pychologist for almost thirty years.

I refer people to this book and work them through it as a course in thinking and feeling change! It is clear and understandable.
I was taught Transactional Analysis by my Clinical professor. We also used TA in the theraputic community when I was a prison psychologist.
The authors combine gestalt process along with transactional models. But the language is concrete and the sources of the content are tangible.
It is a process oriented book, with some insight thrown in. Hopefully we will continue to keep it being published. Possibly an updated version? You may not be old enough to remember when the grocery store gave out gold and green stamps for merchandise redemtion?
So the idea of collecting stamps as a way of describing building up feelings of injustice may be confusing. I have used this as a text in bibliotherapy for some clients who radically changed there lives before my eyes.

I actually do! In my practice! I am continuing to recomend this book to my clients. As I mentioned above it is a little dated. Eric Bernes was a classicaly trained therapist.
It combined with other skills provides insight as to why we behave as we do. This version is a 25th anniversary edition. I recomend it! I bought this for a family member, as I had studied Transactional analysis in the 's.
