Summary Complete with equations, illustrations, and tables, this book covers the basic theory of electric power transformers, its application to transformer designs, and their application in utility and industrial power systems.

The author presents the principles of the two-winding transformer and its connection to polyphase systems, the origins of transformer losses, autotransformers, and three-winding transformers and compares different types of transformer coil and coil construction.

He describes the effects of short circuits on transformers, the design and maintenance of ancillary equipment, and preventative and predictive maintenance practices for extending transformer life. Request an e-inspection copy.

Thermal Modelling of Electrical Insulation System in Power Transformers

The primary winding is attached to the generator; the secondary side is attached to the load. When a time-varying voltage is applied to the primary, a magnetic field is created inside the ferromagnetic core.

The ferromagnetic material serves to concentrate the magnetic flux within the windings. The magnetic flux on the outside of the windings is reduced and the efficiency of the device is increased. The time-varying magnetic field induces a voltage in the secondary winding.

The magnitude of the secondary voltage depends on the turns ratio of the primary and secondary windings. Suppose that the secondary winding of a transformer has turns, while the primary winding has only 50 turns. The resulting secondary voltage will be twice that of the primary voltage.Careful oil maintenance is necessary especially at transmission voltages.

The transformer primary star point and the source generator are solidly earthed such that zero sequence currents arising from a fault on the secondary side of the transformer may flow in the primary circuit. Operational experience has not always been good, with corrosion and leakage problems, and the complexity of water pumps, pipes, valves and flow monitoring equipment.

In order to avoid damage to the insulation, the maximum service temperature must be limited. To accommodate these effects virtually every practical transformer will need tappings to allow selection of different voltage ratios to suit different circumstances.
